The Youngs’ home is a customized ultra modern, ultra plush 8000 square foot original built within the country setting of Mauna ‘Olu Estates. As its Hawaiian name indicates this gated community is truly a "pleasant valley" retreat and rare find.
The Youngs’ home took several years to build beginning in 1993 to landscaping and completion in 2000; it is truly a dream home on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. The property is nestled in the scenic Makaha Valley at 700 foot elevation; all the living areas, the back yard and swimming pool look out at winter sunsets over the clear Pacific Ocean. The mountains surrounding the valley are so close that they seem to hug three sides of the home further enhancing this wonderful setting for island living. The name of the valley - Makaha - translates from the poetic Hawaiian language to mean "in or through the breath of life" (there is a Hawaiian myth that life emanated from this valley).
The surrounding mountains rise to 3000 feet and speak with mutable waterfalls, a signature of heavy winter rains; and at times the mountains peak through low lying clouds reminiscent of the song "Bali Hai" from the movie "South Pacific". From this home’s back yard one can view the white foam pounding on the world renowned Makaha Surfing Beach and turn to see the rising mountains on three sides giving one a truly 365 degree view literally from mountain to ocean. At night appears one of the clearest views of the stars anywhere and in the distance you can see the sparkling lights of the small old plantation town of Makaha. Daylight brings a view to the ocean, about 1 mile in the distance, over two 18 hole golf courses positioned on each side of the palm tree lined drive leading to the 24 hour guard gated entry into the estates.
The 78,000 square foot lot on which the Young’s home is built is at least 85% flat and is fully utilized. It is surrounded by and arranged within 2700 linear feet of natural rock walls, built with rock taken from this property during excavation. In addition to the entry/exit circular driveway and parking areas there is a one fifth mile paved jogging course around and inside the property’s perimeter. Walkways and roadways are woven among the plush tropical landscaping of grass, boulders, flowers, fruit trees, herbs and palm trees. There is even an infrastructure for a home garden, fish pond and fountain. The home is surrounded by an environment that is unique to Hawaii. Mauna Olu Estates Homeowners’ Association maintains within its borders an ancient and historic Heiau (sacred Hawaiian Temple) and wild life such as the peacock, mongoose, McArthur bird, finches, and the white Barn owl are often seen by many residents.

The Youngs’ home, even though it is a large and accommodating home, its architecture is such that it blends almost completely into the natural and total country atmosphere. This home has 15,000 square feet under roof; 8,000 square feet of living area; a 1600 square foot utility basement and emergency shelter; 2200 square feet of roof covered lanai (porch) and a four foot wide roof overhang. The house has a five zone central air
conditioning system, plus screened awning and casement windows all around which
provide selective tropical ventilation year round. Windows are double paned insulated,
by Anderson, and are sized to withstand 180 mph hurricane winds.
The Youngs moved into this home in early 1998 with a family gathering of 17 relatives who occupied 6 bedrooms. It was the test of the entire home with six and ½ baths of which three are equipped with Jacuzzis (one designed for the physically challenged). The house brought for the family the best of city living to the middle of a country setting: dual electronic and conventional lighting; dual electronic and conventional telephone and intercom; the latest home theater connected to 20 additional speakers built into ceilings throughout; and finally facility for outside recreation - barbeque and bar with seating for 20; the 10 person poolside hot tub was a popular feature for teenagers; the diving board was slamming in the early morning and the oversized 45,000 gallon heat able swimming pool, with its straight away lap lane served its fitness purpose. "The house" passed the tests problem free and became easily qualified as THE family gathering place in Hawaii.
The house is positioned downhill from the street with its front facing the street and the mountains. The rear, facing the pool and ocean, is ideal for private entertainment at sunset or any time of day, with 15 foot deep covered lanais to allow enjoyment even when it’s raining. The rear yard is terraced in such a way that the view through the rear windows gives an appearance that the water’s edge connects directly to the property edge. Post card sunsets with frequent green flashes occur during the cooler months (70-80 degrees) of November through February and are visible throughout the rear of the house. During the hotter months (75-95 degrees) the sun sets over the mountains, providing much needed evening shade. These results were part of the original plan. The house is rotated 18 degrees off center line of the lot to maximize effective ocean and sunset views. Winter months are true paradise months.
This immaculate uniquely designed modern home in the country is built to withstand hurricanes, earthquakes and the formidable Hawaii termite. The frame and support structure is of heavy and medium gauge steel and reinforced concrete construction. All windows and doors are anchored to heavy duty steel tubing. The exterior walls are built of concrete block with steel reinforcement fully grouted.
The high ceilings are anchored to a grid of 12 inch I-beams welded to steel posts that extend to the foundation. This house has the same skeleton structure as commercial and industrial buildings. Finished ceilings are often stepped or gridded with a combination of both indirect and recessed lighting. The interior lighting offers daylight intensity at any location and with electronic push button dimming of any level from 0 to 100%.
The living room area is arranged to flow in two directions away from a large circular foyer entryway beneath a 20 foot ceiling of back lit multiple pie shaped glass panels each finished with floral art.
Each part of the house has a common name devised during the design phase and are still in use today. The telephone intercom system allows paging and call transfers and communication from room to room by name. The names are:

The straight through Foyer leads to a large 20’ X 30’ Living Room looking straight out to ocean and sunset views. The layout of the Living Room features both the view and a large wood/gas burning fireplace. Outside of the 20’ Bow Window is the 16 foot deep fully covered lanai, which shades the Living Room from direct sun until sunset. Off the Foyer is also a 500 Square foot formal Dining Room with built-in buffet counter to match a connecting Pass-through Butler’s Pantry.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the house is the party wing composed of the award winning Kitchen/Family Room in combination with the outside covered rear lanai and bar accessible for entertainment from the Kitchen/Family Room and the adjacent Living Room. The Kitchen section is visually open to the Family Room over a full wet bar with swivel chair seating for six. Adjacent to it is a built in Breakfast Nook with seating for up to seven. The Kitchen can be separated from the Family Room by tri-panel sliding doors that roll back into a hideaway pocket. The 25’ X 29’ Family Room and built-in theater facility can seat 16 comfortably. It also has a large wood/gas burning fireplace to warm the room, if desired, on the few nights of 60 degree winter chill. This wing is ideal for in or outdoor entertaining in sunny or inclement weather.
The main Master Suite is composed of four large rooms: Master Bedroom , private Office (with mountain views inspirational to any writing project), Sitting Room and an enclosed lanai with a large sky light (to enjoy the many starry nights) and casement screened windows (which when opened often provide wonderful mountain breezes to rejuvenate the spirit). The Master closet has His and Her walk-ins and a large common area. The large His and Her Master Bath Room (with marble throughout) is equipped with two large mirrored sink cabinets, each with two double-side mirrored medicine cabinets and 450 watts of immediate lighting.
The Master Bath is also equipped with a large and deep Jacuzzi for two, a walk-in twin shower and a J-Dream steam sauna with enclosed Turkish pulsating shower all electronically controlled. There is more in the luxury Bath Room: a mirrored exercise area with ballet bars. The exercise area is separated from the sink areas by a large 10 foot long central floor to ceiling cabinet with medicine cabinet on one end and a built-in ironing system on the other. This built-in free standing cabinet has doored storage cabinets all around including space for stereo, TV, microwave, refrigerator, phone, a folded massage table and built-in speakers. The Master Bath even has its own stacked large capacity washer/drier.
The floor plan of this luxury home shows only the lower floor. Besides the large utility basement, there is a bonus suite upstairs comprised of a large bedroom and lounge area, a large tiled bathroom, enclosed shower and step-up Jacuzzi. It also can easily be equipped with a Coffee Maker, Microwave and Refrigerator. It has an outside Lanai for private sunbathing and exercising. The lanai is on the ocean side offering spectacular ocean and mountain views from a higher and outside perspective. This special suite is called the Upper Room and the beauty and amenities of this special room - a favorite of guests - is a final conclusion of what the house is about.
The back yard has accommodations for swimming, tennis (the smallest regulation size court), basketball and croquet, providing many choices for sports and exercise. The central croquet court area is also designed for golf chip and putt, a good way to prepare for a golf game on either of the two 18 hole golf courses positioned on two sides and at the edge of the Mauna ’Olu Estates Subdivision. Each Club House is a one minute drive or a ten minute walk, having restaurant and golf amenities, one with hotel
accommodations and plans for many improvements (as of June 2004).
This home will best serve a large family or would make a wonderful luxury get-away for one who loves the outdoors and nature. This setting provides easy access to surfing, golfing, hiking, safe jogging in a gated community or on the property, whale watching, swimming with the dolphins or star gazing. Paradise?
